SIMON HIGGINS
Higgins’ paintings are a gateway to adventure; an escape-pod from mundanity to liberation and imagined worlds where impossibilities do not exist and freedom is paramount. Through found images presented in a novel context and combined with abstract forms, Higgins creates layered images of surreal landscapes. The pictures often depict scenes of positive, transcendental forces whilst being balanced against undertones of the sinister.
Much of Higgins’ work flirts with elements of photo-realism, abstract expressionism and surrealism. Also representing the labour of mastering the raw material to create a new language that symbolizes his visions. The physical act of working and manipulating the paint is alone a major part of his subject matter.
In reflection of his classical training and background in street art, Higgins’ works are fused by an urban edge. This fusion is seen in the form of drips, splashes and geometric shapes combined with traditional landscape painting, with dynamic, striking yet romantic results. Referencing architecture, classical painting and nature to create new worlds of escapist ideologies.
